Walker's Coffee Shop and Pub

The girls in my department introduced us to probably the best weekly event in Athens: Monday $1 Wine Night at Walker's Coffee Shop and Pub. Located on College Avenue between E. Broad Street and Clayton, Walker's offers specialty coffees, teas, sandwiches, a full bar, and Wi-Fi access.

The wine selection comes from the Salmon Creek line made by the Bronco Wine Company. They offer several options at Walker's (including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and White Zinfandel - I'm partial to the Cabernet), all of which are are a $1 a glass on Monday. Walker's has two porches, one faces College Ave. and the other is behind the pub in the alley. Recently, they changed the front setup from small tables and chairs to tall chairs and a little more than a shelf to place your drinks on (something everyone agrees is a travesty), but the ambiance is still pretty good.

If you get the munchies after a few glasses, within easy walking distance is The Taco Stand, The Grill, and Little Italy Pizzeria. And at a dollar a glass, you can drink well from just the change in your couch!

Wine Comes From A Bottle

In a big college town where lawns are frequently littered with cans of Keystone light, it can feel like there is little else to drink. So we are confronted with a problem when something else does come up:

WINE. Does one get a box or a bottle?

Box wines, such as Franzia and Almaden, are cheap and readily available for those who don't much care about anything beyond getting drunk for cheap. Sure, that's fine and great but there are also delicious bottled wines that one comes across for only slightly more than the cost of most box wines. We support the drinking of bottled wines and hope that you do the same.

Put down the box. Pick up a bottle. Pour yourself a glass.
